  1. My Garage Today

Top Ten Tips for creating a better Flea Market

If your Garage looks like this then you better read this article.

  1. First Advertise, Advertise, Advertise. You have to be willing to do more than make a hand written sign, that nobody can read from a passing car. Remember you're want to sell stuff, right. The more traffic the better your chance of making that sale. Check out some really bad signs on my blog I Break for Yard Sales.
  2. Sort and group like items together. This is the poor mans up-sell. I grouped everything I had about horses together; books, pictures, figurines, light switch cover etc. Customer asked about one item and I ended up buying everything.
  3. Stack them deep and sell them cheep. If you have multiples of something give a discount for the entire lot.
  4. The Price is right. Most people like to know how much you expect before they begin to haggle. So place a slightly higher price on the tag and go down from there. Some won't ask if they don't see a price and they'll just move on to the next table.
  5. The More the Merrier. Ask you neighbors if they want to join in. The bigger the market the better the chance you will attract customers. Hey you may be able to split the cost of a table or the cost of advertising with them.
  6. Be friendly for God's sake. Talk Talk Talk, offer free advise on what it is or how to use it. Tell a funny story. If they like you they won't mind paying you what you ask. Hey if that doesn't work at least you passed the time in a good way.
  7. If it's Free it's for Me. Doesn't hurt to have free coffee or freshly made cup-cakes on-hand to set you apart from the other sellers. I always have some chotchkies to give my best buyers.
  8. Man all this waking is making me thirsty. You can sell a case of cold water for more than you paid on a hot day.
  9. Heck break out the grill and let the kids sell hot dogs and lemonade during lunch time. Sometimes people are in a better mood after they eat.
  10. Last but not least be there and be friendly. True story My wife wanted buy some corn so we stopped at a house that had a sign saying Fresh Vegetables. We pulled into the driveway and a car pulled in directly behind us went into the garage and shut the door. The people never came out! Do you think we bought there? If your going to sell stuff then you have to be available to answer customers questions.

Ok That's all for now but be warned I'm out there taking pictures of the bad signs I see and posting them to my blog. Don't let yours show up in my hall of shame. Happy selling.
